Friends And Foes Of The Lord

9 Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead. 10 But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death; 11 Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.
34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
22 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.
any, hearing that Jesus was in Bethany, came to see Him (cf. v.9). John states two reasons for their coming to Bethany. First, “they came …for Jesus’ sake.” They knew Jesus through His previous teachings and works. They have seen Him and heard Him. They believed Him, so they came for His sake. They came to honour Him, for they loved Him. Second, “they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.” Those who love the Lord will love those whom He loves and blesses. It is only natural that they get together to listen to what the Lord has done in each one’s life. Let us rejoice to hear what the Lord has done for others, for it glorifies the Lord.
Let none say, I come to church only for the Lord’s sake, but I will have nothing to do with the people in the church. Don’t say to a faithful pastor, I only honour the Lord, but I don’t care about you. Neither say, I only serve the Lord, and not the church. But let us be like these friends of Jesus who “came not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead. Jesus said, A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another” (John 13:34).
While those who loved Jesus, loved Lazarus, those who hated Jesus, hated Lazarus (vv.10-11). Jesus has repeatedly said that His enemies in the world will hate His followers (Matt 10:22; cf. Mk 13:13; Lk 21:17; Matt 24:9). “If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you” (John 15:18-19).
Love the Lord (and all who love Him) in sincerity and truth.
Teach me, Lord, to love all whom You love, and never to fear the world that hates me because of my love for You.
